ABSTRACT

Since the attack of 9/11 on the World Trade Center Towers in New York, the Pentagon, and the planned attack on the Capitol Building in Washington, DC, greater attention has been given to the threat that terrorist groups represent in the world. The attention has naturally been greater in the United States given the devastating nature of the 9/11 attacks, but it has increased in other countries as well. The 9/11 attacks were sophisticated, well planned, and well coordinated on symbols of US military, economic, and political prominence in the world. These attacks have been followed by deadly assaults in other areas of the world, including Bali in Indonesia, London, Madrid, Beslan and Moscow in Russia, and Mumbai (Bombay) in India. Some groups that relied on terrorism have been eliminated or have given up their political struggles, but new groups have appeared to mount new challenges. More than a decade after 9/11, the world still faces signifi cant threats from terrorist groups.
