Institutionalization of the Fatehpur Ashram’s Nāth Belonging

WithVéronique Bouillier

The personal charisma of Amritnāth was not sufficient to ensure the permanency of such a small Ashram as it was at its founder’s death. The Ashram’s continuation was secured by organizational factors, the first being adherence to a specific tradition capable of supporting and controlling the new institution. The Amritnāth Ashram declared itself part of the Nāth tradition but the involvement was stated more a posteriori than a priori, since Amritnāth’s links to the Nāth seems to have occurred rather later in his life and perhaps even by chance.
