ABSTRACT

In the present situation of the Nāth Yogīs, the importance given to the monastery of Kadri near Mangalore in Karnataka may seem puzzling. Its many peculiarities such as the solemn enthronment of the superior invested with the unique title of rājā, and the long pilgrimage that surrounds the ritual, make us wonder: why Kadri? what part did this southern religious centre play in the Nāth Yogī tradition, which seems now much more important in northern India, and what is its role today?
