ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how schools decide on their vision for a subject and how this vision evolves into school policy. To write a vision for English is to create and define what we aspire to achieve as the leader of English in our school. The vision should be ambitious for all pupils and in accord with both the school's values and our own philosophy of English teaching. When starting to shape our ideas it can be helpful to look at examples of school English vision statements. Vision statements can also be the 'rationale' or 'philosophy' statement in a policy document. English has a pre-eminent place in education and in society. A high-quality education in English will teach pupils to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them.
