ABSTRACT

The central theme of the book is “head, heart and gut”, and while all of these need to function in coordination with one another, this chapter addresses the first part of this, namely “head”, or brain and mind.

To provide a broad and fundamental understanding of relevant aspects of brain function, this chapter offers a brief and basic introduction to neuroscience: the brain and nervous system, including the range of activities that these control.

Some vital distinctions are highlighted between left- and right-brain activity, and “fast and slow” thinking. We would contend that these are fundamental understandings for all professionals.

While the notion of IQ suggests an objective assessment of intelligence, the chapter supports a more diverse view of this, with the various different orientations of the brain, for example its mindful, social, ethical and spiritual aspects. And how does the brain relate to the mind? Is there a clear answer to this?
