ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the principal concepts of the theory of transactional distance (TTD). Primary constructs of autonomy, dialogue, and structure that are essential for understanding the theoretical paradigm of transactional distance are presented in the language of system dynamics. This form of representation shows the interrelationships among the key concepts of the theory and the temporal and dynamic nature of their interaction. The concept of transactional distance is further explained as a measurable construct, a postindustrial idea, and a postmodern notion. This explanation is presented to illustrate how these attributes ground the TTD in the framework of a scientific paradigm. A review of selected literature about the TTD is presented in the Appendix to provide the necessary background for this chapter.
