ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on taking a scholarly approach to and the role of data in evidence-based evaluation of teaching in contexts such as merit raises or promotion and tenure. It outlines a framework for supporting and assessing teaching quality for all instructors across all departments on a campus. The definitions of excellence and evaluation tools from a Teaching Quality Framework (TQF) can be used guide the work of faculty development centers so that they can promote faculty growth as teachers in ways that are aligned with the tenure and promotion process. The TQF structure draws from several decades of research on the evaluation of teaching as a scholarly activity, and the TQF process draws upon work in institutional and organizational change in higher education to create holistic, sustainable, and scalable transformations. The chapter offers a model and process for assessing and supporting high-quality teaching as a scholarly activity.
