ABSTRACT

Instead of concentrating on resolving conflicts and initiating dialogue with the society at large, the central authority had been excessively engaged in social management and stability maintenance. There has not been any alternative approach to stability discourse in addressing conflicts in Xinjiang under the new leadership while the party is enthusiastically pursuing an optimistic goal towards rejuvenation of China’s national dream. This chapter focuses on social management works at the local level, various aspects of the present round of violence and future policy trend towards the conflict-ridden region. This chapter also points out that the party leadership had given priority in handling the Xinjiang problem more effectively, but the policies towards the region still oriented to an all-out struggle against terrorism rather than demands of the common people. This book concludes that ethnic conflicts and social unrests by minorities and other marginalised people will continue as China strives to realise its millennial goal of becoming a powerful and prosperous nation with renewed prestige in the world.
