ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the intent of this book which is to use a ‘modest pedagogy’ to critically examine strength and conditioning practices in a non-confrontational manner. The four authors are introduced describing their motivations for contributing to the book. The need for the book and the intended readership are identified along with an overview of the aims and organisation of the book chapters and sections. This chapter provides an explanation of the intended meanings of the key concepts that underpin this book, namely the notions of sociocultural, pedagogical and biophysical theory.
