ABSTRACT

This chapter extends the theme of naming and framing challenges in professional work and discusses ways to challenge status quo positions within strength and conditioning using research and personal and professional introspection. The stated strength and conditioning goal of deliberate weight gain described in the pedagogical case is examined from multiple perspectives and includes concerns for an individual’s health and wellbeing, their potential exposure to injury and the possibility of declines in performance. The desirability of deliberate weight gain is reviewed, and how best to achieve weight gain is discussed along with the rationale for periodisation, and the expected adaptive responses from a high training volume. Fatigue in this setting is also contemplated by considering the influence of sporting and training history, as well as personal and social circumstances on an individual’s susceptibility to fatigue.
