ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the ergonomic aspect of maintaining the health, safety, and performance of the individuals at race tracks. It considers the other roles that are more easily overlooked but are no less important to auto racing. The chapter addresses the conditions faced by safety crews and event personnel. There are many diverse roles included in the categories of “safety” and “event management.” With that said, there are several commonalities as well. Human error occurs when various types of committed or omitted actions result in undesirable consequences; however, the occurrence of an undesirable consequence does not indicate the presence of an error. The chapter also focuses on limitations and errors, but we as authors have yet to offer any concrete guidance on how to address these limitations. The safety crew and the event staff form necessary component to automobile racing. These crew members and marshals act in the event of an on-track incident that may range in various magnitudes of severity.
