ABSTRACT

It was on my return from the Indian subcontinent in 1980 that I was appointed as deputy head to Redlands School. Redlands is a tall, imposing Victorian building at the end of a cul-de-sac, buried in a maze of narrow streets with rows of terraced housing. There is a high proportion of owner occupiers. Most homes have been extended and modernized; they are well-maintained and decorated and have carefully tended small front gardens. An interesting neighbourhood. The population has changed over the years and indigenous families have been joined by families from the Caribbean and the Indian subcontinent, especially Moslems from Pakistan plus a smaller number of Hindus and Sikhs.
