ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a definition of ‘transmedia work’, resting on conceptual elaborations of ‘transmedia’ and ‘work’. It argues that the value of studying transmedia work as a token of digital modernity in a Swedish context. There are many ways of describing what is new about contemporary media society and the mediatized lifeworlds people inhabit. Transmedia means, first, that text, users, and their practices – as digital data – move across devices and platforms. If ‘transmedia’, for natural reasons, has been theorized only, the meaning of ‘work’ has been debated by politicians, historians, economists, and other social scientists for centuries. The normalization of the transmediascape means that people start taking the communicative conditions for granted and expect others to be part of the same landscape of transmedia technologies and places. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
