ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the ambiguous meaning of privilege in times of transmedia work and highlight how occupational privilege is threatened by complex transmedia entanglements. It examines several elementary forms of transmedia work as a way of theorizing the space of symbolic and social struggle that transmediatization gives rise to. The chapter addresses the role of social design as a prospective tool for solving the negative consequences of transmediatization. It identifies some of the enduring challenges for future research in light of social inequalities actualized by transmedia work. The complex role of design has gone largely unnoticed in mediatization research. Design research has overlooked the on-going debates around mediatization, which implies that many of the negative side-effects related to media dependence have not been addressed in a constructive way. The chapter argues that transmedia work actualizes a growing need to build bridges between mediatization research and the field of social design.
