ABSTRACT

Chapter 10 explores the concepts of guilt and shame, how these can impact upon individuals, and how therapists can work integratively with guilt and shame. Stories and case studies are included to illustrate key points of therapeutic aspects involving guilt and shame. The complex nature of guilt is highlighted through its classification into ten different categories. Chapter 10 also explores guilt and shame and their origins from the perspective of unconscious internal conflicts. Material included in this chapter allows trainee counsellors and those working in mental health contexts to explore self-development within this sphere through enhancing understanding of triggers for guilt and shame, and what feelings and behaviours shame and guilt can provoke in individuals. Chapter 10 explores working with guilt and shame through person-centred, relational, CBT and hypnotherapeutic modalities.
