ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 explores how working therapeutically with people involves working with both conscious and unconscious processes. Clients often come to therapy because they want to understand better what motivates and governs their actions and emotions, and therapy can be an important mechanism through which to shine a light on their conscious and unconscious minds. This chapter explores the conscious and unconscious mind and how therapists and other mental health practitioners can work integratively with an understanding that human beings have both. The chapter looks at the structure of the brain and how this links with the conscious and unconscious. The role of stories, myths and metaphors in therapy is also explored, relating this to the interplay between the conscious and unconscious mind.
