ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the neuroscience of mental models – the ideas people hold to explain the world and how to act appropriately. Mental models are habits of thinking and the coach’s work is to uncover and help the client overcome limiting mental models. Different ways that mental models are acquired are explored. The chapter explains how the brain predicts and then modifies its prediction in the light of sensory experience, despite the impression it happens the other way round. Examples of optical illusions are given to demonstrate the principle. The chapter explores the neuroscience that generates the language and feeling of ‘should’ and ‘should not’. Characteristics of limiting mental models are listed. This chapter details a comprehensive method of challenging and helping clients overcome limiting mental models by getting feedback on the ideas.
