ABSTRACT
The British in 1857, and subsequent historians of the revolt, have failed to explain how the rumour about the greased cartridges originated. There were other phenomena observed in the beginning of 1857 whose origins and meaning remain mysteries even to this day. The best known of these is the circulation of chapatis.
