ABSTRACT

During the revolt of 1857 many Indian leaders issued proclamations appealing to their countrymen to support their cause against the British. The Azimgarh proclamation, quoted in full as an appendix to this article, was issued after the seizure of the town in mid-1857 and is among the few documents presenting the Indian side. The present attempt to assess the Azimgarh proclamation is also used as a take-off plank for raising certain questions about the revolt.
