ABSTRACT

Work design requires a tradeoff of multiple criteria. The criteria are vague, and no explicit tradeoff equations are available. This chapter focuses on six design criteria: safety is first, make the machine user-friendly, reduce the percent excluded by the design, design jobs to be cognitive and social, emphasize communication, and use machines to extend human performance. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law in 1990, although the starting date for some actions was postponed a few years. The ADA has 5 sections: access to employment, public services, public accommodation, telecommunications, and miscellaneous provisions. The chapter also focuses on access to employment. The access to employment was designed to prohibit discrimination in employment against "qualified individuals with disabilities." The organizational goals are affected by the goals of the employees. These goals are divided into physiological and psychological–social. Employees naturally want to work with the least stress.
