ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the search for a solution. Searching for the best job design is divided into three categories. The first category is unstructured search, typified by brainstorming. Both the second and third categories are structured search. The second category is checklists. The third category uses the acronym SEARCH (simplify, eliminate, alter sequence, requirements, combine, and how often). In unstructured search, ideas (green-light thinking) are encouraged and criticism (red-light thinking) is discouraged, because criticism may discourage contributions. Avoid "groupthink," the drive for consensus that suppresses disagreement and prevents the appraisal of alternatives. Eliminate unnecessary work is discussed under four subcategories: eliminate unneeded work, eliminate work where costs are greater than benefits, use the exception principle, and use self-service. Of course, errors cause much work. Perhaps a deburring operation can be eliminated by initially using sharper tools or tools with a different rake angle.
