The U.S. Patent Office, which annually receives about 100,000 applications, inspects the application for completeness, assigns it a serial number and filing date, preliminarily classifies it and assigns it to a group of examiners knowledgeable in the field to which the invention relates. One or more examiners examine the application to determine patentability of the invention described in the claims of the application.
