ABSTRACT

Few systems of any type ran unattended and without maintenance. Though operator presence is not required in many scrubbing installations, the operator can be there, "in spirit" at least, through the use of instrumentation and the implementation of preventive maintenance procedures. The chapter suggests basic procedures that should be considered relative to industrial scrubbers and scrubbing systems. The most significant economic penalty is gas pumping costs, which are a direct function of the gas phase pressure drop. This relates to the type of scrubber, operating conditions, efficiency and the liquid rate—so all portions of the system are involved. Wet scrubbers are basically chemical process equipment. As such, a good chemical and chemical engineering background can be very helpful to provide successful operation. Scrubbing systems, as chemical processing equipment, do not require large numbers of operation/maintenance personnel. However, these individuals should be trained and capable of performing the required functions.
