ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction to basic pars plana vitrectomy, including the equipment used for the procedure, the basic set-up for vitrectomy, core vitrectomy, and peripheral vitrectomy, as well as removal of the posterior hyaloid during pars plana vitrectomy. The basic equipment required for pars plana vitrectomy includes a vitrectomy machine, a light source, an air pump, a lens viewing system, and an operating microscope. The primary instrument used during pars plana vitrectomy is a vitreous cutter, which allows high-speed cutting of formed vitreous and controlled removal of the vitreous gel with low suction. Most vitrectomy machines are equipped with a built-in light source, usually employing yellow light. A corneal cover may be utilized during the vitrectomy set-up and for closure of the ports and conjunctiva at the conclusion of surgery in order to minimize the risk of phototoxicity.
