Period Doubling as a Universal Route to Stochasticity

In dissipative systems, period doubling is known to provide a route, with universal properties, from coherent to chaotic behavior. ¹ This chapter describes an analogous transition in area preserving maps, which represent the simplest conservative systems. This transition almost completely eliminates closed invariant curves from the vicinity of an originally stable periodic orbit.
