ABSTRACT

A rapid transit system of about 200km has been planned for New Delhi and the realisation of these plans is now taking place with the design and construction of two corridors including an underground metro corridor of 11km length. This paper deals with the metro corridor and outlines the development of the system, the contract strategy and expected ground conditions. The stations and associated running tunnels are described with particular emphasis on the Chawri Bazaar Station in the heart of Old Delhi, which will be a tunnelled station.
