ABSTRACT

Tubular Structures, consisting of curved tubes, are a consequence of the so called “Blob Architecture” with natural-like shapes without right angles.

This kind of architecture is a challange to all those involved. Bending and cutting of the hollow sections plays an important role in determining the final product. The hollow sections must be formed by spline-curves, which are guidelined from the 3D-drawings. The ends of the sections have to be prepared to suit intersecting contours by thermal cutting. Customers require perfectly-fitting parts prepared for welding, which can be set up in the same way as straight tubes.

The article describes, with the use of the “Red Bull Hangar7”-project at the Salzburg-airport/A, the special equipment used for bending and cutting sections and the sequence of operations.
