ABSTRACT

The concentration of the study is on the elastic–plastic behavior of CHS and RHS column to wide flange beam connection performed by test and finite element analyses. It consists on the estimation of local and shear deformation (θL and γP), initial stiffness K, yield load Py and maximum load Pmax with various parameters such as D/t, Bf/D and t/t. Furthermore, the effect of members such beam, column and joint panel are also taken extra considerations. The summary of investigating test and numerical analyses results are shown below:(1) CHS column connections show stable behavior up to θ = 3/100, and SHS column connections show unstable behavior at θ = 3/100, (2) Initial stiffness of the local deformation of the connection subjected to horizontal load is larger than that of vertical load for CHS column connection. The effect of loading condition on initial stiffness of local deformation for SHS column connection is small, (3) FEA results follow test result with good accuracy, and (4) There is a big difference between the shear stress between inner and outer face of element at the joint panel. The inequilibrium of the shear stress is caused by the local deformation.
