ABSTRACT
As the name implies, the differential relay checks the difference between the input and output currents for any power system element, either in amplitude or in phase or both, to determine whether the state of the power system element is health or faulty. In the event of a substantial difference, the element is assumed to be faulty and the circuit breakers are tripped to disconnect the element from the remaining healthy system.
