ABSTRACT

One of the goals of total productive maintenance (TPM) is to improve equipment efficiency, and this chapter describes the TPM approach to achieving that goal. There are two ways to improve equipment efficiency: a positive way and a negative way. The positive way is by making the most of the functions and performance features of the equipment. The negative way is by eliminating the obstacles to efficiency — obstacles that, in TPM, are called the six big losses. They are breakdown losses, setup and adjustment losses, idling and minor stoppage losses, reduced speed losses, quality defects and rework, and startup/yield losses. The chapter examines the six big losses one by one, and discusses how to minimize or eliminate them completely. The losses are breakdown losses are Breakdown losses; setup and adjustment losses; iIdling and minor stoppage losses; reduced speed losses; quality defects and rework; startup/yield losses reduced yield between machine startup and stable production.
