ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on machine-related processing abnormalities and ways to determine the optimal processing conditions for avoiding failures and defects. Many minor stoppages and product quality defects can be traced to abnormalities within the manufacturing process. The brief definition of an abnormality is something that deviates from the standard. If the work, molds, jigs, and other machine-related aspects of the process deviate from the established standards, one will get increasing numbers of minor stoppages and product defects. Thus, if one can reduce the machine-related abnormalities within the process, the machine will run under favorable conditions, breakdowns and defects will decrease, and the useful life of the machine will be extended. Unless machines and equipment are truly wrecks ready for the scrap heap, operating them with uniform materials under uniform operating conditions should help to avoid defects and stoppages. Eliminating processing abnormalities is the first step in improvement. ,.
