The hazards inherent in consistent interpretation

Although these analysts assume that the regressed patient has given up relationship to real whole objects, and is capable only of relating to part objects, they use for the purpose of communicating with such patients conventional language, but mix it freely with nouns like breast, milk, contents or inside of the body, part-objects, etc., and verbs like stand for, split off, take in, incorporate, project, persecute, damage, etc. By the way, breast, milk, inside of the body, etc. started their careers as normal words, having an agreed conventional meaning, but in the course of time they have undergone a curious change, and their meaning has become at the same time extended and comprehensive - in my opinion, in consequence of their being applied to the description of phenomena belonging to the area of the basic fault.
