ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses why the United States began encouraging quality improvement and why the movement did not produce the desired results. A way to discuss the impact of the computer is in terms of existing types of “work.” Four types can be defined based on the amount of control and the amount of opportunity enjoyed. These are slave, subsistence level, situation improvement, and developmental. The style of leadership that will eventually prevail will be facilitatorship. Facilitators are leaders who no longer considers themselves superior to the rest of the team. Facilitators believe only that they are bringing a different set of skills to the effort. The historic evolution of management theory has led people to the point where the major challenge of society has become finding ways to empower employees so that they can contribute most effectively in the team setting.
