ABSTRACT

The two leaders of Cetus differ in colour. Beta, magnitude 2.0, has a K-type spectrum, but the orange hue is not striking. Alpha is an M-type giant, and the redness is very evident in the photograph. The galaxy M77 can just be made out, close to Delta. It was discovered in 1780 by Pierre Mechain, and is a Seyfert system, with a prominent nucleus and weak spiral arms; it is a splendid object in a small telescope. The section of Eridanus includes Epsilon, which, like Tau Ceti, is not too unlike the Sun and is close by cosmical standards; its distance is 10.7 light-years, and it has 0.3 the luminosity of the Sun. Whether or not it is attended by planets is not known, but it is at least a promising candidate.
