ABSTRACT
In an ideal optical system, the only light reaching the image plane is that which forms the desired image. In a real system some light reaches the image plane that is not directly image-forming and has the effect of reducing image contrast. This unwanted light is usually known as ‘veiling glare’ although it is also referred to as ‘flare’ or ‘stray light’.
