ABSTRACT

This chapter covers international treaties, ISO 14000, and World Bank standards. There are a number of international treaties that regulate industrial wastewater plants which discharge to the ocean or to international waters. ISO 14000 is an international quality type standard for environmental protection. It requires the setting up and operation of an environmental management system. Records shall be maintained as appropriate to the system and to the company, to demonstrate conformance to the requirements of ISO 14000. The World Bank standards are widely used as benchmark standards for industrial wastewater plants around the world. The World Bank standards are used for all projects that are financed by the World Bank, and are used by many other banks for international projects. It is necessary to obtain a copy of these laws and regulations before designing a wastewater plant in a foreign country.
