ABSTRACT

Four major factors influence the choice of an extraction process:

The cost of production of the metal from the available feedstock (ore, concentrate, flue dust, etc.) by each of the possible extraction methods, relative to the selling price of the product, as discussed in Chapter 1.

The feasibility of producing a metal with a composition suitable for the next stage of processing. This involves consideration of the extent to which the possible reactions can proceed and is determined by thermodynamic constraints.

The rate at which the composition changes can be achieved, which is controlled by the kinetics of the reactions.

Environmental and safety legislation, which is progressively becoming more restrictive and limiting the freedom of choice.
