ABSTRACT

We developed a simplified numerical method for a ductility design of concrete-filled steel piers with octagonal cross-section. The method is based on a frame analysis with a fiber beam element, but is capable of analyzing the effect of local buckling of the component plates. Accuracy of the proposed method is examined by comparing the numerical results with those of pseudo-dynamic tests carried out in Nagoya University. It is shown that the proposed method is good enough and useful for a practical seismic design of bridge pier with octagonal cross-section.
