ABSTRACT

In the present paper, certain basic features of the analysis and the design of the prototype of a steel tower for an 1 MW wind turbine are presented. The load bearing steel tower has a total height of 44.075m and has a tubular shape with variable cross section and variable thickness of the wall along its height. The steel structure has been manufactured by steel quality S355J2G3. For the simulation and the static analysis of the structure, two different finite element models have been developed. Based on the latter results, the design of the steel tower for the gravity, seismic and wind loadings of the structure has been performed according to the relevant Eurocodes. In particular, concerning the seismic loading, a dynamic phasmatic analysis of the tower according to the Greek Antiseismic Code (EAK 2000) has been carried out. In the last part of the paper, some conclusive comments that concern the previous analysis and design procedure are in details discussed.
