ABSTRACT

the seismic part of the Colombian Seismic Resistant Design and Construction Code will be presented. The chapter that includes the seismic provisions for structural steel buildings also will be discussed. The topics this paper will cover are: (a) The presentation of a brief history about the Code. (b) The analysis of the main general seismic provisions this code includes. (c) The specifications for steel structures design in seismic zones. The seismic chapter of the Colombian code is based on the seismic provisions for structural steel buildings proposed by the AISC in 1994. The Colombian provisions have differences with the AISC/94 provisions, mainly in the steel frame classification as a function of the energy dissipation level, and their seismic performance, also in the response modification factors definition and their values, the earthquake loads evaluation, and some others. These differences will be presented on this paper.
