ABSTRACT

Load capacities of steel columnar members for their dynamic stability are investigated by a non-linear inelastic finite element analysis. The stability under time varying transverse motion induced by rigid body excitation of the members is particularly focused. The investigation clarifies several non-linear characteristics on the particular aspect of columnar member response under the rigid body excitation in the transverse direction during desired time. The parametric study enables some comparisons of the column strengths under the rigid body excitation with the column strength curves for their static design loads.
