ABSTRACT

Think about the most skilled performers you know. Are there any characteristics that they seem to share? If you’re like most people, one characteristic on your list is likely confidence. Skilled performers put their audience at ease by making everything sound easy. The moment they take the stage, they communicate to their audience that they are in charge, and that the listener need not worry that the performance will turn out all right. Even when the performer wants the audience to believe that the music is incredibly difficult, their demeanor suggests a certain false concern-that they are merely acting to get the desired dramatic effect.
