ABSTRACT

In this text, “less common simple meters” is defined as simple meters that use a half note or eighth note as the beat-note value. Reading music written in these meters may seem difficult because it looks so different from what you are most accustomed to seeing. You can minimize this perceived difficulty if you keep these basic principles in mind:

1. In simple meter, regardless of the beat-note value, each beat divides naturally into two parts, and each division further divides into two.
