ABSTRACT
The most unexpected variety of modulation is direct or unprepared modulation. These often happen at the beginnings of phrases, but you may sometimes experience them within a phrase. Direct modulations require you to be able to sing the interval that separates the last note in the old and the first note in the new key, and then to quickly reorient yourself in the new key.
