ABSTRACT

Use the major tonic triad as your point of reference when singing and hearing these outside of the context of a piece of music.

The pitches of a triad can be arranged in six ways, which we will call orderings. The six orderings of a root position G major triad are:

1. Use the tonic (I) triad in major, consisting of scale degrees 1, 3, and 5, as your point of reference. 2. Hear your given pitch as scale degree 1. (If you are singing a triad in order, you may need to hear it as 3 or 5 and sing

the scale degree pattern to find tonic.) Sing the scale degree patterns to set up the key. 3. Sing the component scale degrees.
