ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the subject of monitoring a process by means of quality control charts. Control charts serve the primary purpose of continuously monitoring whether the manufacturing process is under statistical control. When working with control charts one has to distinguish between two different phases. In the first phase the control chart is designed and implemented. The second phase contains the continuous application of the control chart on site. It includes drawing the samples at the specified times, the determination of the observed values or counts for the inspected sample units, the evaluation of the sample statistic, entering of the results into the control chart as well as making the decision according to the given decision rule. When administering process control by means of control charts, three parameters need to be specified: the sample size, the control limits and the time interval between consecutive samples.
