ABSTRACT

In a munitions factory during World War II, many of the line people were young women with boyfriends or family overseas on the front lines. These operators were determined to make the best product possible for their men to use in battle. At the end of the line someone would weigh an artillery shell for the powder content. If it was above the standard, she would yell back to the beginning of the line and they would reduce the amount of powder. If it was below, they would increase it. The correcting went on like this all day long, up or down.
