ABSTRACT

At the end of the year 2000 the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management started executing a full scale test embankment. Using a new consolidation technique, a sand fill of 10 meter gross height will be constructed on 5 meter of very soft peat layers in a relatively short time period. Extensive monitoring is being performed in order to analyse and evaluate if this new concept is a suitable alternative compared to traditional methods using vertical drainage and temporary surcharge for constructing relatively high embankments in a short time interval on top of soft layers. The evaluation should also make clear whether existing design codes are applicable for this new concept.
