ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to give a review of ground improvement techniques commonly used in the eastern coastal region of China, but, more importantly, to point out some important issues facing each of these techniques. Emphasis is given to preloading in combination with vertical drains, deep mixing with cement, vibro-compaction, gravel stone drains and dynamic compaction. The issues related to time-dependent strength gain in the freshly densified soils by vibratory or dynamic methods and field verification testing by the SASW method are also discussed. Finally, several case histories covering vibro-compaction, gravel stone drains and dynamic compaction method are presented.
