ABSTRACT

Soft clays are prone to large compression as at high water contents their bearing capacity will be poor. To counteract this detrimental compression of these clays, many additives have been used. Fly ash. a hazardous industrial waste of the thermal power plants, is a major source of pollution and needs proper disposal. It has been used in many geotechnical applications. This paper presents the effect of fly ash on some engineering characteristics of soft clays such as compaction behaviour, compression index and coefficient of consolidation over different pressure ranges. It has been found that addition of fly ash has improved the engineering behaviour of clays.
